Nameko: Complete Growing Guide

The Nameko (Pholiota nameko) is a Japanese mushroom characterized by its cap covered with a shiny mucilage.

Characteristics

  • Color: Shiny amber orange
  • Flavor: Mild, slightly earthy
  • Texture: Gelatinous on the outside, tender on the inside
  • Size: 2-5 cm caps in clusters

Optimal Conditions

Requires very high humidity to develop its characteristic mucilage. Cultivation on very wet sawdust.

Harvesting Tips

Harvest whole clusters. The mucilage is normal and desired - do not wash it off.

Culinary Uses

A must-have in miso soup! Perfect in noodles, stews, and Japanese simmered dishes.
